Grace United Church, Thornbury ~ Dr. Christopher Burton, Director

OPENING REMARKS:
Dr. Christopher Burton

HYMNS:
Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
1. Come, thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set thy people free:
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in thee.

2. Israel’s strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth thou art,
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

3. Born thy people to deliver;
Born a child and yet a king;
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.

4. By thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

Words: Charles Wesley 1744
Music: Psalmodia Sacra 1715

All Earth is Waiting
1. All earth is waiting to see the Promised One,
And open furrows await the seed of God.
All the world, bound and struggling, seeks true liberty;
It cries out for justice and searches for the truth.

2. Thus says the prophet to those of Israel,
“A virgin mother will bear Emmanuel.”
One whose name is “God with us,” so come all and see,
through whom hope will blossom once more within our hearts.

3. Mountains and valleys will have to be made plain,
Open new highways, new highways for our God,
Who is now coming closer, to come all and see,
And open the doorways as wide as wide can be.

4. In lowly stable the Promised One appeared.
Yet, feel that presence throughout the earth today,
For Christ lives in all Christians, and is with us now;
Again on arriving, Christ brings us liberty.

HYMNS:
Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending
1. Lo, he comes with clouds descending,
See the Lamb for sinners slain!
Thousand, thousand saints attending
Join to sing the glad refrain:
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, God appears on earth to reign.

2. Every eye shall then behold you,
Robed in awesome majesty;
All who jeered, and mocked, and sold you,
Pierced, and nailed you to the tree,
Deeply grieving, deeply grieving,
Deeply grieving, shall the true Messiah see.

3. Now redemption, long expected
See in solemn pomp appear;
All the saints, by us rejected,
Thrill the trumpet sound to hear:
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Hallelujah! See the day of God appear!

4. Yea! Amen! Let all adore you,
High on your eternal throne;
Crowns and empires fall before you,
Claim the kingdom for your own:
O come quickly! O come quickly!
O come quickly! Everlasting Christ, come down.

Words: John Cennick 1750;
rev. Charles Wesley 1758 and Martin Madan 1769;

Good Christian Friends, Rejoice

HYMNS:
What Child is This
1. What child is this, who laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
while shepherds watch are keeping?
Refrain:
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary!

2. Why lies he in such mean estate
where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
the silent Word is pleading.
Refrain:
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary!

3. So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh;
come, one and all, to own him,
The King of Kings salvation brings,
let loving hearts enthrone him.
Refrain:
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary!

Go Tell it on the Mountain
Refrain
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

1. While shepherds kept their watching
O’r silent flocks by night
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.

Refrain:
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

2. The shepherds feared and trembled
when lo, above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Saviour’s birth!

Refrain:
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

3. Down in a lonely manger
the humble Christ was born,
And God sent our salvation
That bless-ed Christmas morn.

Refrain:
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

Jesus, our Emmanuel!
