PRELUDE  Sheep May Safely Graze ~ J.S. Bach

GREETING (2 Cor 13:14)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Additional Scriptures (included in service themes, not read today):  Genesis 29 :15-28 Jacob marries Leah and Rachel. Romans 8:26-39 The Spirit intercedes for us when we cannot pray.

No matter what happened yesterday, now is the time to call upon God, to lay our lives before our creator, and to proclaim God’s wonderful deeds to one another. Now is the time to worship.

Praise the Lord! We Gather to sing praises to God. Praise the Lord! We gather to give thanks for all God has done in our lives. Praise the Lord! We gather to worship our creator, redeemer and sustainer.

Holy One, we come before you with sighs too deep for words. We come with hearts overwhelmed— by the world, by personal relationships, and by inward struggles. We come to praise your name and to be reassured of your unending grace. In this time and place, open our hearts to your presence. Open our ears to hear your word proclaimed. Open our hands to serve you and the world. May our lives reflect Christ who walks with us and gives us life. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen.

HYMN   VU 220 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, who rules all creation; O my soul, praise him at all times your health and salvation. Come, all who hear: brothers and sisters draw near, joining in glad adoration.
2. Praise to the Lord, above all things so mightily reigning, keeping us safe at his side, and so gently sustaining. Have you not seen how all you needed has been met by God's gracious ordaining?
3. Praise to the Lord who will prosper our work and defend us; surely his goodness and mercy will daily attend us: ponder anew what the Almighty can do, who out of love will befriend us.
4. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath come now with praises before him! Let the Amen sound from God's people again: gladly with praise we adore him.

Loving God, you search our hearts to see all the good, all the challenges, and all the obstacles in our lives. You remember the times we have turned away from you— the times we have forgotten we are your beloved children. Forgive us when we do not act as your faithful followers. Remind us we are a part of your family. May your Son, Jesus Christ, intercede in our lives to bring us grace and healing. Help us be your servants and share your story with the world. In your precious name, we pray. Amen.

Beloved children of God, nothing in this life can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Receive the forgiveness of God, and go forth to be the loving community of faith. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
As we prepare to listen for what the Bible is saying to us, let us pray: Holy One, fill our hearts with your Spirit. Open our ears to hear your word proclaimed. Remind us that you are always with us, guiding us to be your faithful disciples. Amen.

PSALM: Psalm 105 :1-11, 45b (VU 828, Part One) Make known what God has done.

Refrain Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Give thanks and call on God's name. Make known to the nations what God has done.
Sing, O sing the songs of praise; tell of all God's wonderful deeds.
Exult in God's holy name;
let those who seek God be joyful in heart.

Refrain Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Turn for help to the One who is your strength; seek God's presence continually.
Remember the marvels the Most High has done,  the wonders and judgements God has given;
O children of Abraham and Sarah, God's servants,
O offspring of Israel, chosen of God.

Refrain      Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

You are the eternal God,
your justice reaches every corner of the earth.
You are ever mindful of your covenant, the promise you gave to a thousand generations,
the covenant you made with Sarah and Abraham      the oath you gave to Isaac.
You confirmed it for Jacob as binding. To Israel your everlasting covenant you declared,
"To you I give the land of Canaan,      as your appointed inheritance."

Refrain   Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

GOSPEL: Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52 Five parables: mustard seed, yeast, treasure, pearls, net.

RESPONSE: The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON “What We Know… but Can’t Quite Know…”

THE LORD’S PRAYER (Spoken, traditional words, VU 921)

We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,    crucified and risen,    our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

1. Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the unity of heart and mind is like to that above.
