GREETING (2 Cor 13:14)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

WELCOME
Additional Scriptures (included in service themes, not read today)
Romans 12:9-21 Let love be genuine, overcome evil with good.
Matthew 16:21-28 Take up the cross and follow me.

CENTERING WORDS and INTENTION-SETTING
Let love guide your path, for love is the holiest path of all. brief silence to set our intention for this time of worship

CALL TO WORSHIP
Holy, holy, holy. Holy God is here. Holy, holy, holy. Love has called us here. Holy, holy, holy. We gather to worship our holy God.

OPENING PRAYER
Holy God, we come this day, into this sacred moment and this sacred space, aware that your holiness is always around us. As Moses before us, when we turn aside from our daily tasks, and we listen for your holy voice, speak to us in holy mystery. Surround us with your wondrous love, that we might be wise enough to understand your call and be brave enough to follow your path. Amen.

HYMN   VU 561 Take Up Your Cross
1. Take up your cross, the Saviour said, if you would my disciple be; take up your cross with willing heart, and humbly follow after me.   2. Take up your cross; let not its weight fill your weak spirit with alarm; Christ's strength shall bear your spirits up, and brace your heart, and nerve your arm.   3. Take up your cross, heed not the shame, nor let your foolish pride rebel; your Saviour once accepted death upon a cross, on Calvary's hill.   4. Take up your cross, and follow Christ, think not till death to lay it down; for only those who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
In the midst of your holy presence, O God, we encounter a mystery deeper than the foundations of the earth. You are who you are sacred and indefinable. Forgive us when we try to put you in a box or frame you in our own image. Help us as we allow your divine image to define and shape us. Speak mercy and grace to us when we deny the path before us, and guide us with your shepherding love when we are unsure of how to follow. Strengthen us and give us the courage to say: “Here I am, ready to love and serve.” In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE
We are in the presence of the Holy One, whose holiness is in our very being. Rejoice and be glad, for in Christ’s love we are reminded of this divine truth: We are God’s beloved creation, reclaimed for a holy path.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
As we prepare to listen for what the Bible is saying to us, let us pray: Creator, we pray, as we ponder your word, bless us with your wisdom and grace     that we may join your Spirit’s dance,         and be moved to live in the way of your Christ. Amen.

SCRIPTURE:
Psalm 105 :1-6, 23-26, 45c (VU 828-829, Parts One and Three, Refrain from VU 228)
Remembering Jacob and Moses

Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Give thanks and call on God's name. Make known to the nations what God has done.      Sing, O sing the songs of praise;      tell of all God's wonderful deeds. Exult in God's holy name;      let those who seek God be joyful in heart.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Turn for help to the One who is your strength; seek God's presence continually.      Remember the marvels the Most High has done,      the wonders and judgements God has given; O children of Abraham and Sarah, God's servants,      O offspring of Israel, chosen of God.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

You are the eternal God,      your justice reaches every corner of the earth. You are ever mindful of your covenant, the promise you gave to a thousand generations,      the covenant you made with Sarah and Abraham      the oath you gave to Isaac. You confirmed it for Jacob as binding. To Israel your everlasting covenant you declared,      "To you I give the land of Canaan,      as your appointed inheritance." Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

When Israel came to Egypt,      when Jacob settled in the land of Ham, there you made your people fruitful,      stronger than their foes. But when you turned their hearts to hate your people      to deceitful dealing with your servants, then you sent your servant Moses,      and Aaron, whom you had chosen. Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Exodus 3:1-15 Moses encounters the burning bush.

RESPONSE
The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF PREPARATION
Holy God, as we sit in this moment of sacred worship, breathe your Holy Spirit within us. Speak to us in the silence. In silence we prepare to reflect on God’s word. Reveal your presence in the fire of love that burns in our own spirits. Show us your holy path, that we may move forward in confidence and courage. Amen.

SERMON “Love Is the Fuel”

HYMN  MV 161 I Have Called You by Your Name
1. I have called you by your name, you are mine; I have gifted you and ask you now to shine. I will not abandon you; all my promises are true. You are gifted, called, and chosen; you are mine.
2. I will help you learn my name as you go; read it written in my people, help them grow. Pour the water in my name, speak the word your soul can claim, offer Jesus' body given long ago.
3. I know you will need my touch as you go; feel it pulsing in creation's ebb and flow. Like the woman reaching out, choosing faith in spite of doubt, hold the hem of Jesus' robe, then let it go.
4. I have given you a name, it is mine; I have given you my Spirit as a sign. With my wonder in your soul, make my wounded children whole; go and tell my precious people they are mine.

PROFESSION OF FAITH A New Creed
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,    crucified and risen,    our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
HYMN OF HOPE MV 169 When Hands Reach Out Beyond Divides
1. When hands reach out beyond divides and hope is truly found, each chain of hate will fall away and bells of peace shall sound, and bells of peace, of peace shall sound, and bells of peace shall sound, each chain of hate will fall away and bells of peace shall sound.
2. When fear no longer guides our steps and days of war are done, God's dream for all shall live anew; our hearts will heal as one, our hearts will heal, will heal as one, our hearts will heal as one, God's dream for all shall live anew; our hearts will heal as one.
3. When race and creed blind us no more, a neighbour's face we'll see, and we shall dance the whole world round, for love will set us free, for love, yes love will set us free, for love will set us free, and we shall dance the whole world round, for love will set us free. Amen
