PRELUDE   Sonata in E flat Major 2nd Mov't ~ Haydn

GREETING (2 Cor 13:14)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

WELCOME

Creation Time CALL TO WORSHIP
MV 130 Rise Up, Rise Up (2x) Rise up, rise up, rise up, O my soul. Rise up and sing this blessing to God's name. Rise up, rise up, rise up, O my soul. Rise up and sing this blessing to God's name.   Come, Let us worship.

OPENING PRAYER   O God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, we scarcely can comprehend the vastness of your love for us. Like the Israelites in the desert, we marvel at what you do for us. Let our time of worship be filled with heartfelt praise and gratitude to you, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING:   Bread and quails to feed the people. Exodus 14:19-31 (NRSV)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O God, We listen to the story of the Israelites in the desert, and how they complained. We recognize that sometimes, when we are in the deserts of our lives. we too can complain against you, and we can miss the gifts you have placed before us, saying, "What is it?" Forgive us, God, when we forget to look with the eyes of faith at what you have provided for us. (a moment of silent prayer)

WORDS OF ASSURANCE Friends, Take comfort in knowing that God keeps loving us and caring for us even when we do not recognize how that love and care is shown in our lives. God's grace is abundant, like manna from heaven! Thanks be to God.

HYMN VU 633 Bless Now, O God, the Journey
1. Bless now, O God, the journey that all your people make, the path through noise and silence, the way of give and take. The trail is found in desert and winds the mountain round, then leads beside still waters, the road where faith is found.
2. Bless sojourners and pilgrims who share this winding way, whose hope burns through the terrors, whose love sustains the day. We yearn for holy freedom while often we are bound. Together we are seeking the road where faith is found.
3. Divine Eternal Lover, you meet us on the road. We wait for lands of promise where milk and honey flow But waiting not for places, you meet us all around. Our covenant is written on roads, as faith is found.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
As we prepare to listen for what God is saying to us through the Bible, let us pray: Creator, we pray, as we ponder your word, bless us with your wisdom and grace     that we may join your Spirit’s dance,         and be moved to live in the way of your Christ. Amen.

GOSPEL READING:   Daily wages for the labourers; what’s fair?         Matthew 20:1-16  (NRSV)

RESPONSE: The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

HYMN   MV 127 I Saw the Rich Ones
1. I saw the rich ones I saw what they gave the widow who offered two pennies she'd saved and I saw she was smiling I knew she was glad and I wondered because she gave all that she had
Refrain But with God the world is turned upside down the poor are embraced and the lost they are found Let's work for a world where all people are free where it's good to feel good about God loving you and me.
2. I saw Zacheus, a sinner they said but to his house I saw Jesus go to break bread and I knew something special had happened that day when Zacheus gave half of his riches away
Refrain But with God the world is turned upside down the poor are embraced and the lost they are found Let's work for a world where all people are free where it's good to feel good about God loving you and me.
3. The men in the vineyards were grumbling one day I knew they weren't happy with what they'd been paid for the ones who came later were paid just the same as the workers who greeted the dawn when they came
Refrain But with God the world is turned upside down the poor are embraced and the lost they are found Let's work for a world where all people are free where it's good to feel good about God loving you and me.

PROFESSION OF FAITH A New Creed
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,    crucified and risen,    our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 105 VU pp.828-829, Parts One and Four Make known what God has done.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Give thanks and call on God's name. Make known to the nations what God has done.      Sing, O sing the songs of praise;      tell of all God's wonderful deeds. Exult in God's holy name;      let those who seek God be joyful in heart.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

Turn for help to the One who is your strength; seek God's presence continually.      Remember the marvels the Most High has done,      the wonders and judgements God has given; O children of Abraham and Sarah, God's servants,      O offspring of Israel, chosen of God.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

You are the eternal God,      your justice reaches every corner of the earth. You are ever mindful of your covenant, the promise you gave to a thousand generations,      the covenant you made with Sarah and Abraham,      the oath you gave to Isaac. You confirmed it for Jacob as binding. To Israel your everlasting covenant you declared,      "To you I give the land of Canaan,      as your appointed inheritance."
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

You led Israel out, with spoil of silver and gold. Among the tribes not one fell behind.      The Egyptians were glad when they went,      for dread of Israel had fallen upon them. You spread cloud as a screen, and fire as light by night. The people asked, and you sent them quail, you filled them with bread from heaven.      You opened a rock and water gushed out:      It flowed like a river through the arid land.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

For you remembered the sacred promise you made to Abraham and Sarah, your servants.      You led out your people rejoicing,      your chosen ones with songs of gladness. You gave them the lands of nations;      they took possession where others had toiled,      that they might keep your laws and obey your teachings.
Refrain                        Sing praises to God, sing praises to God.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
The prayers of the people this morning take the form of a litany. When you hear the words "O God, in your great love", please respond with "Hear our prayer".
O God, in your great love, Hear our prayer.

O God, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, We marvel at the love you show us. But God, there are places in our lives and in our world where we need your healing grace more than ever. In areas of conflict, where humanity's selfishness and greed threaten global peace, bring your justice.
O God, in your great love, Hear our prayer.

Where people do not have enough to eat, open the hearts and hands of those who can share.
O God, in your great love, Hear our prayer.

Protect refugees fleeing conflict and danger, as you protected the Israelites of old as they fled from Egypt. O
God, in your great love, Hear our prayer.

Our life with COVID restrictions can feel like we are wandering in the desert. Our lives have been turned upside down, and we long for a word of hope.
O God, in your great love, Hear our prayer.

In the silence of our hearts, or out loud, or in the chat box if we wish, we name any other concerns that we would like to bring before God. (silence)
O God, in your great love, Hear our prayer.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (Spoken, traditional words, VU 921)
