GREETING (2 Cor 13:14) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

WELCOME       Creation Time CALL TO WORSHIP MV 130 Rise Up, Rise Up (2x) Rise up, rise up, rise up, O my soul. Rise up and sing this blessing to God's name. Rise up, rise up, rise up, O my soul. Rise up and sing this blessing to God's name.   Come, Let us worship.

OPENING PRAYER   O God, we praise you as the one authority we can fully trust. Be with us now, in the presence of Jesus. As we worship, lead us to be your workers. For, when we follow Christ and work for you, we know your peace. True peace. Peace for ourselves. Peace in creation. Peace for the world. Thanks be to you, Source of all good. Amen.

GOSPEL READING:   By what authority does Jesus act and teach?. Matthew 21:23-32 (NRSV)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O God, We listen to the parable of the two sons, and we do not want to be like either of them. We do not want to be like one who says yes but then does not show up. And we also do not want to be like one who starts out saying no. We want to be known as your faithful followers. Always. Help us to notice the times when we have turned from you, Whether it be early on, or after we have promised to follow you. And help us also to notice the times when despite our best intentions of doing your work, we go our own way, and fail to recognize you in our midst. Have mercy on us, we pray.   (silent prayer)

WORDS OF ASSURANCE
Be assured, God gives us many chances. Any time we turn to look for God, Christ is there to lead us to goodness and peace. In Christ we are forgiven and given a chance to start anew Thanks be to God.

HYMN VU 664 What a Friend We Have in Jesus
1. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
2. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.
3. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Christ the Saviour is our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do our friends despise, forsake us? Are we tempted to despair? Jesus' strength will shield our weakness, and we'll find new courage there.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Let us prepare to listen for what God is saying to us through the Bible, saying together: Creator, we pray, as we ponder your word, bless us with your wisdom and grace     that we may join your Spirit’s dance,         and be moved to live in the way of your Christ. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING:    Water flows from the rock for thirsty people. Exodus 17:1-7 (NRSV)

MUSIC FOR PREPARATION   As we prepare to reflect on scripture, let us pause, and invite the Spirit in prayer through music.

SERMON “Water for the Journey”

PROFESSION OF FAITH A New Creed
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,    crucified and risen,    our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

PSALM  Psalm 78: 1-4, 12-16 (VU p. 792 Parts One and Two) God did marvelous things for our ancestors.
Refrain We will tell new generations of the wonders God has done.

Give heed to my teaching, O my people, turn your ears to the words of my mouth.      I will open my mouth in a parable;      I will reveal the hidden meaning of things in the past. What we have heard and known, what our parents have told us, we will not hide from their grandchildren,      but declare to the next generation      the testimony that you give to Jacob      and the law you appointed in Israel,      which you commanded them to teach their children, that the next generation might know them, children yet unborn, and these in turn should arise, and tell their children,      that they should put their trust in you,      and not forget your great deeds,      but keep all your commandments.
Refrain We will tell new generations of the wonders God has done.

Marvellous things you did in the sight of our ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Zoan.      You divided the sea and let them go through,      and made the waters stand up like a wall. By day you led with a cloud, and all the night long with a beacon of fire.      You split rocks in the wilderness,      and gave drink in plenty as from the great deep. You brought streams out of the rock,      and made water run down like rivers.
Refrain We will tell new generations of the wonders God has done.

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST
The Peace of Christ be with you.          And also with you.

OFFERING  We honour all the ways we give as we dedicate our offering.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION OF GIFTS AND SELF God, as you opened the sea and gave your people safe passage. and as you opened the rocks and gave your people water, so now even in the midst of a pandemic you open our lives and give us what we need not just to survive, but to thrive. And so we open our hearts, our homes, our church, and our lives to give back to you a portion of what you have given us. Accept these gifts, and use them to bring the church and the world more in line with your realm of justice, of peace, of wellness, of love. In Jesus’ name we give. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

2. To this temple where we call you, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with your faithful loving-kindness hear your servants as they pray, and your fullest benediction shed within its walls alway.
3. Here bestow on all your servants what they ask of you to gain, what they gain from you for ever with the blessed to retain, and hereafter in your glory evermore with you to reign.
4. Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever three and ever one, one in might, and one in glory, while unending ages run.
