PRELUDE  Prelude Opus 28 #4  F. Chopin

GREETING (2 Cor 13:14) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.   And also with you.

CENTERING WORDS and INTENTION-SETTING brief silence to set our intention for this time of worship

CALL TO WORSHIP MV 182 Grateful (refrain only) * SINGING  Grateful (MV 182)                          (CCLI) Grateful for the life you give us, thankful for your Holy Son, joyful in your Spirit flowing over all, O God of Love. Grateful for the Bread of Heaven, thankful for your Holy Word, joyful in your mercy flowing, we will praise you.

OPENING PRAYER and PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Let us unite our hearts in our opening prayer. Let us pray: O God,          We are truly grateful for the life you give us. We praise you for the gift of changing seasons, which are intertwined with the circle of life. We thank you that you sent your son Jesus into the world, so that we could see what a human life filled with you could look like. We praise you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, which flows over us in all the seasons of our lives. We feel your boundless love for us, and we respond with love and praise. And as we listen to the scriptures that are read this morning, we pray that we will hear beyond the human words recorded in the Bible, and hear your word of truth for us, today.   Amen.

SCRIPTURE   1 Thessalonians 2:9-13

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Let us join together in our prayer of confession. Let us pray: O God, We strive to live lives worthy of you, but we know that we sometimes fall short of our goal. We strive to follow the example of Jesus, but we do not always succeed. We can act in loving ways, but we can also act in hurtful ways. We sometimes pause to listen for your word to us, but sometimes we rush headlong into decisions that may lead us away from you. Forgive us, we pray. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE Friends, remember that however much we fall short of our goal to live lives worthy of God, however much we may stray down a path that leads away from God, that same God always loves us, and is waiting for us to accept forgiveness. Thanks be to God!

HYMN   VU 315 Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty 1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!   2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee; which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.   3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity.   4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

SCRIPTURE:            Old Testament Reading: Joshua 3:7-17

RESPONSE: The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON “Still with Us”

HYMN   VU 595  We Are Pilgrim  (The Servant Song) 1. We are pilgrims on a journey, fellow travellers on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.   2. Sister, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.   3. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.   4. I will weep when you are weeping, when you laugh I'll laugh with you I will share your joy and sorrow, till we've seen this journey through. 5. When we sing to God in heaven, we shall find such harmony, born of all we've known together of Christ's love and agony.   6. Brother, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

PROFESSION OF FAITH A New Creed We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,    crucified and risen,    our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSIVE PSALM Psalm 107, selected verses (VU 831-832 Parts One and Four) O give thanks to God for steadfast love. Refrain O give thanks to God for steadfast love.   Part One O give thanks, for God is gracious;      God's steadfast love endures for ever. Let the redeemed of God say so, those redeemed from trouble,      whom God gathered in from the lands, from the east and the west,      from the north and the south. Refrain O give thanks to God for steadfast love.   Some lost their way in desert wastes, finding no place to settle;      hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to you, God, in their trouble; you rescued them from their distress.      You led them by a straight path,      till they reached a place to settle. Let them thank you, O God, for your steadfast love, for the wonders you do for us.      For you satisfy the thirsty,      and fill the hungry with good things. Refrain O give thanks to God for steadfast love.   Part Four You turn rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground.      A fruitful land you make a salty waste,      because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. But you turn desert into standing pools, dry land into springs of water, to give the hungry a home, a place where they can settle, They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.      You bless them and their numbers increase.      You do not let their herds diminish. Whoever is wise, ponder these things.      Consider God's unfailing love. Refrain O give thanks to God for steadfast love.
