PRELUDE  A Great and Mighty Wonder Old German Tune Harmonized by M. Praetorius

ADVENT 4 CANDLE LIGHTING
But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream! (Those words ere from Amos 5:24) Before his birth, Jesus swam in the life-giving waters of Mary’s womb. He was baptized in the River Jordan and called his first disciples as they repaired their fishing nets by the lakeshore. When he needed respite, Jesus went to the water for rest and healing. Water, for Jesus, and for all of us, is life. As we come to the final days of our Advent journey, may we be filled with the hope, joy, peace and love of Jesus. All four candles are lit. Let us pray: Gracious God, giver of life, as we journey to Bethlehem and the manger, we are thankful for the blessing of this season. For all the blessings around us, for the wonder of creation, and for the gift of Jesus—Emmanuel, God-with-Us—our spirits soar with praise and thanksgiving. Amen. And we sing…
MV 135  Called by Earth and Sky chorus, verse 1, chorus.
Refrain Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high. This is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky.
1. Precious these waters, endless seas, deep ocean's dream, waters of healing, rivers of rain, the wash of love again.
Refrain Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high. This is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky, called by earth and sky.

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP Called by the God who speaks to us through earth and sky, come, let us worship:

OPENING PRAYER O God, We lift our voices in story and song to praise you this day. Be with us as we gather in our homes to worship you. May we feel your presence wherever we are and whatever we do. Help us to understand the meaning of the birth of Jesus as it is told in a new way, and let the joyful story live on in our hearts. We pray in the name of Jesus, the baby of Bethlehem. Amen.

HYMN   VU 36 Angels from the Realms of Glory
1. Angels, from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth; ye who sang creation's story, now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Refrain come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.
2. Shepherds in the field abiding, watching o'er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing, yonder shines the infant Light:
Refrain come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.
3. Sages, leave your contemplations; brighter visions beam afar; seek the great desire of nations; ye have seen his natal star:
Refrain come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.
4. Saints before the altar bending, watching long in hope and fear, suddenly the Lord, descending, in his temple shall appear:
Refrain come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION As we prepare to listen for what the Bible is saying to us, let us pray: Advent is a time of waiting. We acknowledge that sometimes we find it hard to wait, O God. Advent is a time of preparation. Open our hearts and minds, O God, so that we may prepare for the Christ Child to be born in us. Help us to receive your word to us, O God, your word of love for today,     in words written long ago. Amen. And let us enter into the Christmas Story through our Pageant:

SCRIPTURE Luke 2:1-20
