Prepare to be amazed again at God’s teachings, for God’s teachings are amazing still. Prepare to discover wisdom, for God’s word is full of wisdom and truth.

SCRIPTURE  Psalm 111 VU 833 The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Refrain Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.
I will thank you, God, with my whole heart, In the company of the upright, in their assembly.  Great are your works, O God, studied by all who delight in them.  Honour and majesty are your work; your righteousness endures forever.  You have won renown for your wonders;  you are gracious and full of compassion.
Refrain Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.
You give food to those who fear you; you keep your covenant always in mind.  You have shown your power in action, giving your people the heritage of nations. The works of your hands are faithful and just; all your precepts trustworthy. They stand fast forever and ever;  grounded in justice and truth. You sent redemption to your people;  you decreed your covenant forever. Holy and awesome is your name.
Refrain Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom; those who practice it have good understanding. May your praise endure forever.
Refrain Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.  Hallelujah.

GOSPEL READING   Mark 1: 21-28  (NRSV) Mark 1: 21-28  A man with an unclean spirit is healed in Capernaum. 21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. 22. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24. and he cried out, “ What have you to do with us , Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” 25.  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26.  And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching - with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28. At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Additional Scriptures (included in service themes, not read today). Deuteronomy 18: 15-20 God will raise up a prophet after Moses. 1 Corinthians 8: 1-13 Concerning food offered to idols.

RESPONSE: The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

With this love, we are given power and opportunity to transform others with acts of love and grace. Love through us, even as we are loved, that your world may grow ever closer to you and that we may grow ever closer  to your likeness. Amen

MINI-SERMON (TS)

PROFESSION OF FAITH A New Creed
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,  crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

COVENANTING AND CELEBRATING GOALS   Celebrating Last Year’s (2019-2020) Goals (Last year’s goals were sent out in the eblast)

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
We celebrate the many gifts in our midst. Due to the onset of COVID-19 in March of 2020, we were unable to continue working on all of our goals. Therefore, some are ongoing, while others have been completed. Accomplishments from last year’s goals include:
·        The Property Committee completed a renovation of the nursery adding valuable work space to the kitchen. The ladies’ washroom was also renovated. New lights were installed over the organ area and the Hall storage room was cleaned and painted.
·        The Green Team showed a film and was very successful in establishing a new group, CANN, whose mandate is to increase environmental awareness in the community. Grace will continue to support them in their endeavors.
·        We held a very interesting church service in which we heard about the needs of our local seniors. A group from Grace was able to visit a senior’s retirement facility in Penetanguishene.
·        Our first goal has now become the Church Board Vision for 2021 and will be ongoing. Please see the list of 2019-2020 goals sent out in the e-blast.
·        We have also made changes to adapt to the COVID-19 restrictions, including increasing our online presence for worship and meetings, and forming a COVID-19 Safety Commission. Although not stated as a goal, we celebrate our accomplishments and our ability to continue our ministries in this new way.

PRAYER  (CC and TS) Gracious God, for your active presence in guiding us for bringing us beauty in creation for drawing us together in community and sending us out into the world, for giving us gifts of leadership, creativity and vision, for the many ways you have been with us, filled us and carried us through unexpected changes in the past year, we give you humble thanks. Amen.

COVENTING THIS YEAR'S (2021) GOALS
STATEMENT OF VISION AND GOALS: Our vision and goals for 2021 were developed by the Church Board, based on the outcome of last year’s goals, and taking into consideration input from the committees, congregation and the wider community.

CHURCH BOARD VISION for 2021:
The Board, in consultation with the Sustainability Task Group (STG), will continue to develop a missional/transitional strategy for Grace United and will lead and encourage the congregation to be open to trying new ideas and connecting with the broader community in new ways, and support the congregation in these initiatives. We will be searching for a community project that will engage and energize our congregation. Our focus will continue to be Communication and Environmental Issues presented by our Green Team.
CHURCH BOARD GOALS for 2021:
1.      Grace will put in place whatever is necessary to continue streaming services online on a permanent basis, even when in-person worship begins.
2.      We will put in place a return-to-church plan for if and when the church chooses to worship in the building while the COVID-19 restrictions are still in place.
3.      The Church Board, with the Concert Committee, will resume development of a plan for musical concerts at Grace on an ongoing basis.

PRAYER FOR THE JOURNEY (spoken, VU 648) God of the Way, you are the road we travel, and the sign we follow; you are bread for the journey, and the wine of arrival.  Guide us as we follow in your way, holding on to each other, reaching out to your beloved world.  And when we stray, seek us out and find us, set our feet on the path again, and lead us safely home.  In the name of Jesus, our Companion, we pray. Amen.
