GREETING (2 Cor 13:14) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

WELCOME

Additional Scriptures (included in service themes, not read today): 1 Corinthians 9:16-23, I have become all things to all people for the gospel’s sake. Mark 1: 29-39 Simon’s mother-in-law and many others healed.

SUNG VERSE VU 82 A Light is Gleaming (refrain only)
A light is gleaming, spreading its arms throughout the night, living in the light. Come share its gladness, God’s radiant love is burning bright, living in the light. “In the brightness God has given,” we worship.

CALL TO WORSHIP (AWA)
Voice 1: Is anyone here feeling tired?
Voice 2: Yes! I am weary and weighed down  with burdens. Take heart! God gives us strength and energy.
Voice 1: Is anyone here hurt or grieving?
Voice 2: Yes! I am wounded and in pain. Take heart! God heals broken hearts.
Voice 1: Is anyone here short on cash,  pinched for resources?
Voice 2: Yes! I am overwhelmed with debt and the effort of making ends meet. Take heart! God’s reward is free for the taking.
Voice 1: Is anyone here left out, shunned, outcast?
Voice 2: Yes! I have been pushed to the margins, labeled unworthy of inclusion. Take heart! God is calling your name and waiting to gather you close in love.

OPENING PRAYER (AWA)
Holy One, with our ancestors and all the people of God, we gather to sing your praises. You are the one who has created the cosmos and the ants. You give food to whales and sparrows, name the stars, and count the hairs on our heads. Compassionate One, we offer you our thanksgiving for our many blessings. Powerful One, inspire us this day: to turn our praise into action to share your good news with those who long to hear a word of hope, to proclaim your message of peace and justice throughout the world. Praise to you! Amen.

HYMN VU 625 I Feel the Winds of God
1. I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift, though heavy oft with drenching spray  and torn with many a rift; if hope but light the water's crest, and Christ my bark will use, I'll seek the seas at his behest, and brave another cruise.
2. It is the wind of God that dries my vain regretful tears, until with braver thoughts shall rise the purer, brighter years; if cast on shores of selfish ease or pleasure I should be, O let me feel your freshening breeze, and I'll put back to sea.
3. If ever I forget your love and how that love was shown, lift high the blood-red flag above; it bears your name alone. Great pilot of my onward way, you will not let me drift. I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (AWA)
God of Strength, we confess our doubt.  We are weary, but we turn to caffeine  instead of waiting to be carried effortlessly  on your eagle’s wings.  Forgive us, we pray. (silence)
God of Justice, we confess our lack of trust. We are outraged and angry, but we turn to name-calling, tweeting, and demonizing others instead of waiting for you to lift us up from the pit. Forgive us, we pray. (silence)
God of Grace, we confess our reticence.  We praise you with enthusiasm on Sunday,  but then we turn to safe clichés  about separating religion and politics  when we could be proclaiming the message  of your limitless love.  Forgive us, we pray. (silence)

WORDS OF ASSURANCE (AWA)
Hear God’s promise to all: “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. ” Know that God’s promise of grace and forgiveness is free of charge!
We respond, singing
(Refrain VU 808) “And I will raise you up on eagle’s wings bear you on the breath of dawn, and make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of my hand.”

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (AWA)
As we prepare to listen for what the Bible is saying to us, let us pray: You who formed us, named us, and gathered us,  open our ears to hear your message. You who give power to the faint, help us understand your message. You who uplift, strengthen, and heal, inspire us to proclaim your message. We pray in the name of Christ, who is the Message.

SCRIPTURE
Psalm 147 :1-11, 20c VU 868-869, Part 1 God heals the broken-hearted.
Refrain: Sing to God in great thanksgiving.
How good it is to sing praises to God, How pleasant to laud the Most High. You are building Jerusalem, O God, And gathering the scattered exiles of Israel. You are healing the broken-hearted, and binding up their wounds. You count the number of the stars, And call them all by their names. Great are you, O God, and mighty your power; yes, and your wisdom is infinite. You raise up the lowly, And bring down the wicked to dust.
Refrain: Sing to God in great thanksgiving.

Old Testament Reading (NRSV) Isaiah 40: 21-31 Those who wait upon God shall renew their strength.
21 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of earth? 22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23 who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25 To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing 27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30 Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not  faint.

RESPONSE: The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

4. Arise, your light is come! The mountains burst in song! Rise up like eagles on the wing; God's power will make us strong.

PROFESSION OF FAITH A New Creed
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.   We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.   We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,  crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.
